Lady Amtal's Mother was the Countess and ruler of Haljhen of Quon Tali. Lady Amtal was her daughter.[1]

In the formative days of the Malazan Empire, the Countess of Haljhen was an ally of Malle of Gris. A planning meeting of the Grisian allies having been called by Malle, Lady Amtal was sent to Gris by her mother to deliver a message. Basically, the Countess suggested that Gris and her allies consider negotiation. Malle listened carefully to what the Countess of Haljhen had wished her daughter to convey to the council. Malle told Lady Amtal to thank her mother for her wisdom and told her to assure the Countess that all options would be considered. Privately, Malle of Gris felt that Amtal's mother's counsel anticipated defeat, which Malle refused to accept.[2]
