Andrison Balk was commander of the eponymous Balk's Company, a bandit and mercenary company of four hundred well-trained and well-equipped veterans based in Genabackis.[1][2] Although he had never previously served in the military himself, he ran a professional operation and kept his troops well-disciplined.[3] As a leader he had a charisma that drew people's eyes and required only a vague wave of his hands to issue commands.[4] He thought in the long term, insisting it was a better investment for his soldiers to leave their merchant victims alive.[4]
Lieutenant Ara was a long-time comrade while Sergeants Stick, Sugal, and Bray had only been with the troop for two years.[5] Aware of their cruel natures and designs on his position, Balk nevertheless insisted on dealing with them only when caught in the act or when it was tactically expedient. Ara advised executing the three immediately.[6]
He had long, brown hair that he usually kept bound.[4][7] His sword was kept in a polished wooden scabbard belted at his waist.[8]
History[]
Balk came from a wealthy noble family of horse-breeders. Before the Malazan invasion, he had been betrothed to Ara. But after the Malazan victory, his family was punished for their support of the Greydog Army. They were able to keep their lands and horses, but were otherwise left destitute. The Balk estate remained, but Balk's father had died younger than he would have otherwise. Ara's family lost their lands for the same reason and their betrothal was broken, but she remained by his side despite his regular offers to let her go.[9]
