Ara was the Lieutenant of Balk's Company and had served Commander Andrison Balk longer than anyone else.[1] When the Malazan XIVth Legion had captured Balk, she had surrendered the Company to spare his life.[1]
She was deeply hated by Sergeant Stick, both for the surrender to the hated Malazans and because Ara's long history with Balk made her an obstacle for Stick's advancement within the Company.[1] Stick and her fellow sergeants, Sugal and Bray, were cruel and ambitious and Ara recognised their danger to herself and Balk. Ara argued for their immediate execution, but Balk preferred to wait until the trio were caught in the act both in the interest of justice and for tactical expediency.[2]
She wore a leather hauberk.[3]
History[]
Before the Malazan invasion, Ara had been a noblewoman betrothed to Balk. But her family's support for the Genabackan defenders had seen them stripped of their land and wealth, while Balk's had retained its land and horses, but been otherwise left destitute. Their betrothal had been broken, but she remained by his side despite his regular offers to let her go.[4]
