Brans Keep was a Letherii fortress about two days' journey by horse to the northwest of Letheras.[1] It was the final major fortification passed when approaching the capital city from the north or west. The town of Dissent was a few leagues to the keep's southwest.[1]
The keep was a squat, formidable citadel leaning against a sheer cliff that had been carved into the hillside behind it.[2] Beyond the cliff was a range of barren hills.[3] A wall with corner towers stood in front of the keep, each tower defended by large fixed mangonels and their crews.[2]
On the eastern side of the keep was the artificial Brans Lake along with a seasonal river or drainage channel running to the northeast.[4] To the northeast was an arm of lesser hills and old lake beds.[2] Beyond the westernmost edge of the hills and to the south was the Dissent River.[2]
In Midnight Tides[]
The war between the Kingdom of Lether and the Tiste Edur led to a series of Letherii defeats at Trate, High Fort, Fort Shake, and elsewhere. The remaining Letherii field armies withdrew to Brans Keep to form a final defensive line blocking approach to Letheras.

In the battle that followed, the majority of the Letherii army was destroyed, the keep's towers and walls were toppled, and the citadel left a burning ruin.[5]
