The Brold were an isolated clan of Imass that lived on the continent of Lether. They were descendants of those that sought to follow Kilava Onass when she rejected the Ritual of Tellann and thus did not participate in it.[1] They did not have warleaders but were ruled by Bonecasters.[2]

By the time that they attempted the Ritual of Tellann the Jaghut had been gone a hundred generations and the K'Chain Che'Malle had journeyed to the eastern lands two hundred generations previously. The Brold were trading with the Jheck, and then with the Krynan Awl (presumably the predecessors of the Akrynnai and the Awl) and the colonists of the Empire of Dessimbelackis.[3] The Ritual was performed for many reasons, amongst them, the Brold had run out of places to hide from the advancing humans and the ritual promised immortality and the oblivion of all memories. Simple death was ruled out because they had severed their allegiance to the spirits. The ritual was performed by the three remaining Brold Bonecasters, Lid Ger, Lera Epar and Nom Kala.[4]

Nom Kala thought the Ritual failed, as the wall of ice that they had camped under collapsed and killed them (likely all three Bonecasters and an unknown number of Brold) instantly, leaving the Ritual uncompleted. She was in error however for when Onos T'oolan called to all T'lan Imass for revenge, the three Bonecasters and two thousand seven hundred and twelve of the Brold joined him.[5]

Brold meant "polar bear" in the Imass tongue.[6]
