Brother Jool was a member of the Synod of Stygg, a group of mages, witches, and warlocks opposed to the rule of the Lady in the Lands of Fist. He was a caster of the Tiles.[1]

Jool was a short skinny man whose hair and beard were tangled.[2] He wore old finery that had been much patched and frayed.

In Stonewielder[]

Jool gathered with the rest of the Synod near Ebon to discuss a recent proliferation of signs and portents and to consider their future course of action. He cast the Tiles and saw Fire, Night, Earth, Light, Seas, Life, and Death all gathered for the coming season at the Stormwall. All paths led to destruction with no escape for anyone. Consequently, the Lady's grip would either tighten beyond release or shatter beyond repair. In opposition was the House of Death represented by the Malazan Empire as well as a hidden tile representing the Stormriders.[3]

All of the Synod, excepting its leader Totsin, chose to act by supporting the Jourilan Army of Reform in its rebellion against the imperial rulers of Jourilan. Jool, Sister Gosh, Sister Esa, and Brother Carfin invoked a ritual to bring the Reform Army champion Ivanr into the memories of the past to collect skystones and aid the war effort. Gosh and Jool remained with Ivanr even as a creature of the Lady attempted to stop them.[4]

He was later confused by another reading of the Tiles that foresaw betrayal and death. He realized only too late that he had predicted his own murder by Totsin acting on behalf of the Lady. As he collapsed into a pile of withered bones, Jool chided his killer, saying Totsin had been too hasty, the fortune was incomplete and he would never hear the rest of the fate that awaited them.[5]
