Clearwater was a Wickan shaman, likely of the Crow clan. He was an old man with grey shaggy hair.[1]
In Return of the Crimson Guard[]
During the Malazan civil war, Clearwater and his clan were threatened by settlers from Unta looking to exterminate them and take their land. The clan hetman Udep brought his people to take shelter at the Malazan frontier fort commanded by Lieutenant Rillish Jal Keth. The fort was soon surrounded by a growing mob of settlers.
After several weeks under a rapidly deteriorating seige, Udep and Clearwater demanded that the soldiers allow the Wickans to fight in their own defense. When Rillish refused, the Wickans made other plans. As the fort fell to the invaders Udep, Clearwater, and the other elders conducted a bloody ritual to open a magic gateway for the soldiers and children to escape. The ritual cost Udep and the elders their lives. As he lay dying and pierced by spears, Clearwater told Rillish there was no need to thank him "for a fair bargain. Honour it."[2]
