The Death Hold, also known as the Hold of the Dead, was the magical analogue to a Warren and the predecessor of Hood's Path. It was part of the original Tiles of the Holds in the time of the First Empire, but was lost and unremembered by the Empire's former colonists in the Kingdom of Lether.[1]

In Midnight TidesEdit

The Hold of the Dead was unable to manifest in northwest Lether because of the actions of the Jaghut, Gothos, many thousands of years before the events of Midnight Tides. At Mael's urging, Gothos had sealed the land with a ritual of Omtose Phellack to cover the devastation caused by the war between the K'Chain Che'Malle and the invading Tiste Edur and Tiste Andii. [2] In the process, the pathways of the dead were accidentally closed, making the region prone to loitering ghosts, shades, and the undead.[1][3]

Over time Gothos' sorcery thawed, and after the Azath Tower of Letheras perished, the Hold of the Dead began to manifest in its place to reassert balance.[1][3]
