Spoiler safe

The Drowned Rat was a small carrack captained by Cartharon Crust. It had a bizarre lateen rig and centre-stern steering oar and had recently seen some refurbishing. Crust thought that the crow's nest was oversized.[1][2]

The Drowned Rat was the replacement for the Ragstopper which had gone down in Malaz harbour.[3]

In The Bonehunters[]

Crust was onboard the Drowned Rat in Malaz harbour waiting to load up with supplies when the lookout, Vole, spotted the arrival of a small fleet headed by Empress Laseen's flagship The Surly. Crust ordered his First Mate Palet to send any remaining crew members into town to retrieve the goods with haste, bribing warehouse guards if necessary, to enable them to leave as soon as possible.[4]

Crust dropped off Bottle, Grub, Lostara Yil, Withal and Sandalath Drukorlat with her group of Tiste Andii at the Bonehunter's flagship, the Froth Wolf. His ship was described as a small craft and was presumably the Drowned Rat. He demanded sixteen gold Imperials for their delivery from Adjunct Tavore. She ordered for him to be given two hundred and in return badgered him into taking all of her Wickans to safety. Asked by Fiddler how he had come by Crust, Bottle said he'd just followed his rat. Crust had presumably been moored at the Mouse Docks as that was where Grub had told Lostara that they needed to go.[5]

In Return of the Crimson Guard[]

Crust's ship was again called the Ragstopper. This may have been a renamed Drowned Rat as that name does not re-appear in the series.[6]
