Earnolth was a freebooter of Malaz Island — a member of the Malazan privateer fleet under the overall command of the "Pirate Admiral",[1] Mock. Earnolth was originally from Perish — which others considered a distant and "benighted land".[2]
Earnolth, a steersman, was a cheerful "great blond giant" of a man who had a correspondingly loud voice and "rumbling laugh". When drastic situations arose during sea-battles, the "hulking fellow" lashed himself to the tiller-arm — which operated the rudder — so as to insure his uninterrupted control of the handling of the vessel.[3]
In Deadhouse Landing[]
Earnolth was evidently expert and experienced enough to have been given the important position of steersman of Mock's flagship, the man-o-war named the Insufferable.[4]
