Estraysian D'Arle was a councilman and noble of House D'Arle in the city of Darujhistan. On the Noble Council, he was Turban Orr's main rival.[1]
He was the father of Challice and both lived in the D'Arle Estate.
He was an aged man, thin and straight, with grey hair.[2]
In Gardens of the Moon[]
Councillor D'Arle was the principal opposition to Orr's proposal to declare neutrality in the Malazan Empire's conflict with the Free Cities of Genabackis.[3]
At Lady Simtal's Gedderone FĂȘte, Turban Orr named Estraysian his second during Orr's duel with Rallick Nom. The appointment was meant to distress Estraysian's political allies. In the moments before the duel Estraysian publically announced his contempt for Orr and informed Rallick that House D'Arle would seek no vengeance if he was the victor.[4]
In Memories of Ice[]
D'Arle was accompanied by newly returned Councilman Coll to represent Darujhistan in the negotiations with the merged forces of Caladan Brood and Onearm's Host. They successfully concluded an arrangement to supply the combined armies as they marched against the Pannion Domin through the use of the Trygalle Trade Guild.[5]
In Toll the Hounds[]
Unhappy in her marriage with Gorlas Vidikas, Challice ruminated on her now widowed father. She knew he would counsel patience, but she considered how such advice had let him spend a lifetime with a woman he never liked. Now he was grey-haired with a fresh stoop to his shoulders, and he slept ten bells every night.[6]
Estraysian was one of a dozen councillors outside the main chamber of the Noble Council who witnessed Hanut Orr accuse Coll of bribery over matters related to the Malazan Embassy. After Coll sent the young man and his allies (Shardan Lim and Gorlas Vidikas) away with talk of an official censure, Estraysian directed Coll into a private alcove for further discussion. Over wine, Coll admitted the official explanations were flimsy, but the young men were not privy to the true explanations discussed behind committee doors. Estraysian noted the ambitious trio had been assigned to nearly every meaningless committee they could think of, but it was not keeping them busy enough to stay out of the way.[7]
In Orb Sceptre Throne[]
In the Noble Council, Councillor D'Arle and Councillor Coll opposed the appointment of a Legate of Council to rule Darujhistan during an emergency.[8]
