"It shows promise..."
―Gumble's version of effusive praise[src]

Gumble was a skull-sized, olive-green talking toad who served as companion and critic to the Imperial artist Ormulogun.[1][2] The sleepy and laconic amphibian spoke with a low and rumbling voice, which he used to express his disapproval of artistic works which rarely met his high standards.[2] He did not think of himself as a critic, but merely a humble observer speaking on behalf of the ignorant and inarticulate rabble.[3]

In Memories of Ice

Gumble accompanied Ormulogun as the artist documented the efforts of High Fist Dujek Onearm and his Host during the Genabackis Campaign and the Pannion War. Itkovian came across the pair along the Catlin River near Capustan as Ormulogun documented the army's crossing. After briefly engaging them in conversation, Itkovian took his leave when the artist and toad began bitterly squabbling.[4]

In The Bonehunters

Gumble and Ormulogun argued over the meaning of his work as the artist prepared to decorate a barrow at G'danisban. The toad correctly predicted Ormulogun's specific plans for the barrow's walls leading the artist to accuse him of spying on his sketches.[5]
