Ilgast Rend was one of the Tiste in the time of ancient Kharkanas.[1]
In Toll the Hounds[]
Endest Silann was invited to meet with Anomander Rake in a room of pure darkness within the New Palace of Black Coral. The room reminded the old castellan of Kharkanas as he once knew it--before Mother Dark "embraced Light, before the ones born of ashes lifted themselves up and took swords in hand. Scabandari. Ilgast Rend, Halyd Bahann. Esthala who dreamed of peace. Kagamandra Tulas Shorn, who did not."[1]
In Forge of Darkness[]
Millennia before the events of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, Ilgast Rend was the master of House Sengara, one of the Tiste Greater Houses. He was described as a huge man with a broad battered face and soft eyes.[2] He was a veteran of the Forulkan War and a retired cohort commander of Urusander's Legion.[3] He was also a master of the healing arts during which practice he said he experienced a sensation the Shake labeled Denul.[4]
Hunn Raal invited Ilgast to accompany his party of Urusander supporters to their meeting with the commander of the Wardens of the Outer Reach. Ilgast accepted with great reluctance, openly questioning Hunn Raal and Osserc's leadership by asking, 'Does Urusander know of this?'[5] Once they reached their destination, Ilgast met with his friend Calat Hustain privately, and the commander soon declared his neutrality.[6] When the badly wounded Warden Captain Finarra Stone was brought before Ilgast, he was able to use his healing magic save her life and her leg.[7]
Ilgast remained with the Wardens when the rest of Hunn Raal's party departed. Commander Hustain organized a party to investigate the claims of a monstrous invasion from the Vitr sea and made Ilgast temporary commander of the Wardens in his absence.[8] Upon receiving word of the murders of House Enes, Ilgast made immediate plans for the Wardens to march south to Neret Sorr to challenge Urusander and his Legion.[9]
In Fall of Light[]
After a battle against the army of Urusander's Legion, he was executed before the eyes of Hunn Raal.[10]
