Khun-Sen, aka Sen, had been an old general/warlord in the Kingdom of the Thaumaturgs of northwestern Jacuruku two or three generations in the past. There having been a political falling out of some kind between Khun-Sen and the ruling body of the Thaumaturgs - the Circle of Masters - the general and his people had been exiled. The exiles had fled to the eastern border region and there they had taken over the fortress, Chanar Keep, located in the Gangrek Mounts. Khun-Sen became de facto ruler of the Keep and his people - male and female, soldiers and civilians - became his court. Even there, however, Khun-Sen managed to earn the further displeasure of the Ruling Circle, which provoked from the Circle additional severe disciplinary measures upon Khun-Sen and his people. Over time, Chanar Keep and its inhabitants gained a reputation, at least amongst the superstitious, for being, at best, an "ill-omened place".[1][2][3]

In Blood and Bone[]

A young Thaumaturg, Pon-lor, had been lured, along with his twenty guards, to Chanar Keep by Kenjak Ashevajak, who claimed to be a private guard of Khun-Sen. Pon-lor, thinking that this information meant - if true - that Khun-Sen was almost unbelievably still alive, accepted Kenjak's offer of leading them to the Keep to meet with the - by this time - ancient warlord. Once there, however, the young Thaumaturg discovered to his and to his guards' cost that Chanar Keep more than deserved being thought ill-omened. In the end, Pon-lor and his surviving men managed to exit the Keep, but without knowing, one way or the other, if they had in fact, actually encountered Khun-Sen, himself, or not.[4][5][6]
