Kurald Thyrllan,[1] or Kurald Liosan,[2] was the elder Warren, or Hold, of Light. It was inhabited by the Tiste Liosan, with the city of Saranas as its capital.[citation needed] Kurald Thyrllan gifted the world with Light and Day.[citation needed]

In House of Chains[]

According to L'oric, the Elder Warren had been born of violence, the shattering of Darkness. The shattering of its sister warren had left it twisted and fraught, and difficult to enter. The warren had ultimately branched off in many directions, first creating Tellann, the T'lan Imass warren, and later Thyr, the human warren.[3] Telas, the human warren of fire, was said to be a child of Tellann[4] and thus had its roots in Kurald Thyrllan as well.

In Reaper's Gale[]

Beak observed that Stormy and Gesler were "reforged in the fires of Tellann". He then went on to say:" Telas, Kurald Liosan, the fires, the ones dragons fly through to gain immunities and other proofs against magic and worse".[5]

In Toll the Hounds[]

Dillat's Dark and Light recorded how war had raged amongst the dragons once all the First Born (but one) had bowed their necks to K'rul. The children of the dragons, bereft of their inheritance, rose in battle to reject the First Born. Anomander Rake and Osserick had already tasted the blood of T'iam and others came to do the same. War raged upon all the Realms as long as the Gates of Starvald Demelain remained open. Under Osserick, Kurald Liosan was the first Realm to seal the portal between itself and the Realm of the dragons. He cleansed the world of all rivals--the Soletaken and the feral purebloods--and drove out the D'ivers. Crone found much fault in the book's account, so it was unclear how much of this report was accurate.[6]

Trivia[]

Steven Erikson notes that Kurald Liosan is the Tiste Liosan warren, while " 'Thyrllan' is the non-Elder version of Light and it does involve a blending of T'lan Thyr (Fire) with Light. Or something like that."[7]
