Lether and Kolanse by Joshua Butler

Map of Lether and Kolanse by Joshua Butler

The continent of Lether [Leather[1] or LETH-er],[2] (not to be confused with the Empire of Lether) was the setting for the novels Midnight Tides, Reaper's Gale, Dust of Dreams, and The Crippled God. It lay on the other side of the globe from the Malazan Empire. The mapped portion of the continent seen in Midnight Tides extended for over 600 leagues from north to south and for nearly 700 leagues from east to west. The map in Reaper's Gale was significantly larger in scope, but did not have a scale.

To the west of Lether lay the Domain Ocean. To the northwest was the Calash Sea, in the south lay the inland Dracons Sea, and to the northeast, the Bluerose Sea.

Detail of Edur Lands and the North Lether frontier

In Midnight Tides[]

Many millennia before the start of the series, the Tiste Andii and Tiste Edur armies of Silchas Ruin and Scabandari Bloodeye made war on the K'Chain Che'Malle in northwestern Lether. In the aftermath, Mael asked Gothos to preserve the battleground in ice. Gothos conducts a ritual of Omtose Phellack that sealed the land and prevented the evolution of magic on the western part of the continent.[5][6][7] Whereas in other places these Holds would evolve into the more refined magic form of warrens, sorcery in western Lether remained based on Holds.[8] At the same time, Hood and his warren were unknown in the Kingdom of Lether and the surrounding lands.[9] Even knowledge of the Hold of Death became lost and the paths of the dead in Lether were obscured, making the region prone to loitering ghosts, shades, and the undead.[10][11]

In Reaper's Gale[]

Northwest Lether saw many climactic changes as a result of the dissolution of Gothos' ritual. A maelstrom of ice and bergs broke apart and moved south, devouring the coast of the Reach and filling the waters around Second Maiden Fort. Glaciers in the northern Bluerose Mountains began to rapidly shrink and move once more, threatening the destruction of Andara and releasing carcasses and artifacts kept trapped for millennia.[12][13][14]
