A mage was an individual capable of magic abilities. For humans, these abilities were accessed via Warrens, though magic was not uniquely available through Warrens. Holds, ancient versions of Warrens, were also used, and there were also wielders of "ancient magic".
Individuals were born with the ability to wield magic, though their skills varied widely. The rarest few had natural talents that left the paths to power smooth and uncluttered, although no less dangerous if not carefully managed.[1]
