Medium infantry referred to ground troops, less heavily armed and armoured than heavy infantry, but more so than light infantry. The Malazan military, the Pannion Domin, and the Empire of Lether made use of this type of unit. This article refers to the medium infantry within the Malazan military. For Pannion Domin's medium infantry, see Betaklites.
The medium infantry made up the bulk of a Malazan army, at least in the case of the 7th Army and the 14th Army.[1][2] They were armed with pikes and short swords. Additionally, there were soldiers skilled with spears and short or long bows.[3][4] Slightly less armoured than the heavies, they were protected by bronze scale hauberks, greaves, and gauntlets. They wore bronze helmets reinforced with iron bars over chain camails.[5]
