Map Edur Lands

Map of Edur Lands and the North Lether frontier

The Merude were the largest of the six tribes of the Tiste Edur, with a population nearing a hundred thousand.[1] Their lands were located to the south of Breed Bay.

During the War of Unification, they were the last tribe to capitulate to the Hiroth Warlock King, Hannan Mosag. Their combined blooded and soon-to-be-blooded warrior population neared forty thousand, surpassing any of the other tribes. They also possessed more ships, and their chief, Hanradi Khalag, possessed more battle trophies than anyone in generations. What the Merude did not possess was Hannan Mosag's mastery of Kurald Emurlahn.[1]

By the end of the war, the Merude stood alone against the other tribes and the Tiste Edur tradition of restrained combat threatened to descend into desperate brutality. Hannan Mosag ended the war by secretly entering Hanradi Khalag's longhouse and somehow securing the chief's surrender. Hanradi Khalag's son soon joined Mosag's K'risnan as one of the hostage princes.[2]

The Merude favoured a particular style of broad cutlass.[3]

Notable Merude

In Midnight Tides

During the war between the Tiste Edur and the Kingdom of Lether, the Merude fought for their chief at the Battle of High Fort.[4]

In The Bonehunters

Hanradi Khalag, now a Preda of the Letherii Empire, led a fleet of Merude ships to Seven Cities as part of the Third Edur Imperial Fleet.[5]
