Malazan Wiki

Nethpara was a Malazan noble living on Seven Cities.[1] While he might have been muscular in his youth, Nethpara had become fat with age. He wore a light-blue brocaded coat.[2]

In Deadhouse Gates[]

Nethpara was caught up in the Whirlwind uprising and became one of the nobles among the refugees being escorted to Aren by Fist Coltaine and his 7th Army. The desperate flight of the refugees and the general lack of food left him looking like a wrinkled leather bag, though he still projected a coddled, indignant air and his clothes remained spotless. As a member of the march's ad hoc Council of Nobles he was petty and self-centered and only out to improve conditions for the nobles in the Chain of Dogs.[3]

At the River Vathar, he allied with fellow noble Pullyk Alar to push Coltaine to approve enemy commander Korbolo Dom's offer of free passage to the refugees. When Coltaine denied the request, Nethpara and the other nobles made a secret deal with the army of the Apocalypse. The next morning the refugees began crossing the river without permission leading to the Battle of Vathar Crossing. Dom betrayed the refugees, ambushing and slaughtering twenty thousand as well as many in their military escort. Imperial Historian Duiker came across the noble during the fighting and had to be forcibly pulled away before he could finish strangling him.[4]

Nethpara survived and during the subsequent passage through the Sanith Odhan helped secure fresh horses from the Kherahn Dhobri for the noble carriages. The nobles attempted to leave the other refugees behind but were stayed by Duiker.[5]

When they finally reached Aren, he and Pullyk convinced High Fist Pormqual that the refugees had been betrayed by Coltaine and Duiker. Duiker took his revenge by kicking Nethpara in the throat, crushing his windpipe and killing him.[6]
