Nilghan was a warrior of the Black Jheck.[1] In his human form he had a shaggy head of hair,[2] a black beard and moustache, brawny hairy arms, and bright white teeth, and his red-rimmed eyes were like chips of stone.[3][4][5][6] He claimed to be the only Black Jheck to have scaled the great ice of the Toblai Tundra and journeyed into the southlands. He spent ten years among the Humans learning to speak Nathii and visiting Blued, which he believed to be "the world's greatest den".[7] He had been serving as a scout for Blued in the eastern marches at the time Karsa Orlong, Bairoth Gild, and Delum Thord had made their raid on Silver Lake.[7] During his time among humanity, he also learned to cook.[8]
He carried a weapon in his right hand made from a long jawbone whose outer edge glittered with inset chips of obsidian. He held the bone by its narrow end from a grip obscured by hide straps. On his back was a spear whose long point was made of a reddish waxy stone.[4][9] In a sheathe at his belt was a stone knife.[9] In his pack he carried a fire-kit and barbed bone skewers for cooking. He carried firewood in a heavy hide sack on his back.[10]
