While the Malazan 14th Army prepared in Aren for their campaign against the Army of the Whirlwind, Sergeant Gesler and Corporal Stormy lost a large sum of money to Oblat in a game of knuckles. Payment of this gambling debt was used as an incentive by Lostara Yil and the Claw, Pearl, to obtain information from the Malazan soldiers about their knowledge of the movements and whereabouts of Felisin Paran - an offer they gladly accepted.[1]
