Obo [Ō-bō][1] was a Malazan mage and scholar[2] who was rumored to be a malevolent ogre living in the eponymous ruins of Malaz City's Obo's Tower. The tower appeared ruined to most residents of Malaz City only because of Obo's sorcery. He lived in the towers's lower chambers.[3]

When Kiska met him, he was an old man dressed in tattered brown woollen robes, hefting a tree limb as a staff.[4] He was bald but for strands of long wild white hair in a fringe over his ears and had dark eyes and a long hooked nose.[4][5]

In The Bonehunters[]

On the night Adjunct Tavore Paran's Malaz 14th Army visited Malaz City, Oponn, the Twin Jesters of Chance, commandeered the top of Obo's tower. With a clear vantage of the entire city, they looked forward to the night's games of push and pull.[6] Later in the evening, Shadowthrone visited Obo in his tower, informing him of the intruders. The furious Obo slammed the door shut, and after a while, Shadowthrone heard the top of Obo's tower erupt with a fireball and the outraged screams of the Twins.[7]

In Reaper's Gale[]

Hedge's ghost told Emroth how "a miserable old bastard named Obo" had once claimed to witness the death of a star. When the star charts were compared to the night sky, the star was indeed found to be missing. [2]

Obo, Agayla, and Toben were three prominent mages who kept the threat of the Stormriders overbearing Malaz City at bay. Obo appeared on the Night of the Shadow Moon in 1154 BS, and helped Agayla push back the Stormriders who, emboldened by the lack of magical talent due to Laseen's purge of all types of magery on the island, were making a concerted and serious effort to overcome the city and the mages who defended it.[8]

Obo and Agayla were later joined by Tayschrenn, who realized that he had to help them in their fight against the Stormriders as he did not like the alternative outcome which Agayla had shown him. Though suspicious of him, Obo acquiesced, allowing Tayschrenn to help them.[9]
