Palet was the acting First Mate for the Ragstopper.
In Deadhouse Gates[]
Palet gained his position during a voyage contracted by High Fist Pormqual to bring the treasury of Aren to Unta. The cargo was accompanied by the Aren treasurer and his two bodyguards. The treasurer colluded with two ships of pirates to intercept the ship and the bodyguards murdered the original First Mate to make the process easier. The attempt failed.[1]
Later, the ship limped into port in Malaz City where it became the battlefield between Apt and a Kenryll'ah demon. As the ship began to sink, its captain ordered Palet to evacuate the ship. In the excitement Palet nearly blurted out the captain's true name before the man hushed him.[2]
In The Bonehunters[]
Palet was now First Mate of Cartheron Crust's new ship, the Drowned Rat. He became caught up in the mob violence against foreigners roiling Malaz City after the massacre of the Malaz 7th Army and Crust allowed him to lay curled up on the ship's mid deck to recover from his injuries. When the ship's lookout, Vole, spotted a small flotilla of ships bearing Empress Laseen enter the city's harbour, Crust hurriedly dispatched Palet and the crew to shore to gather supplies and ready for immediate departure.[3]
