Phaed was a Tiste Andii who lived on the moving island, Drift Avalii, as one of the youthful protectors of the Throne of Shadow. She was the granddaughter of Anomander Rake.[1][2]

Her hair was white, and Cutter thought she appeared to be his age.[3] Her smile was dazzling.[2] It was noted that none of Rake's kin who guarded the Throne seemed to be particularly familiar with their arms or weaponry.[4]

In House of Chains

Drift Avalii's primary protector was Phaed's ancient great uncle, Andarist, Rake's younger brother. When the island was assaulted by the Tiste Edur servants of the Crippled God, Andarist sent Phaed and the other young Andii to hide deep in the forest. Andarist chose to combat the Edur alone to keep his young relations safe.[1]

Andarist was aided by Cutter during the Edur's first attack. Before the pair could be brought down by the Edur, they were reinforced by Apsalar, Phaed, and the other Andii youths. Apsalar had discovered their hidden camp and brought them along. After the battle, Phaed mercifully cut the throats of the dying Edur.[4]

In The Bonehunters

After Andarist's death, Traveller took over the island's defence and sent Phaed and the other six Andii survivors to safety by ship with about a dozen Malazan Marines, including Mudslinger and Gentur. A storm wrecked their ship on an atoll where they lived off coconut milk and clams for months until being rescued by the Jakatakan Fleet and brought to Malaz City.[2]

Braven Tooth met the castaways while drinking at Coop's Hanged Man Inn and was nearly overcome by Phaed's smile. He learned from her that one of the other castaways was Nimander Golit, Phaed's father and the first son of Anomander Rake. Several of the other castaways were Phaed's half-siblings and cousins. Noting that she did not appear to be entirely Andii in blood, she revealed that Lady Envy was her mother. Braven Tooth reported all of this to Banaschar, his drinking companion, noting that Envy used to know Rake and "got her revenge taking his son as a lover."[2]

Phaed and the other Andii castaways later joined Sandalath Drukorlat and Withal aboard Cartheron Crust's vessel, the Drowned Rat. Crust brought them out into the Malaz City harbour so they could board Adjunct Tavore Paran's flagship, the Froth Wolf.[5]

In Reaper's Gale

Phaed deeply resented Sandalath Drukorlat, who easily saw through the girl's behavior.[6] Nimander feared for Sandalath's safety:

"Woe to the sharp observer who saw, unflinchingly, through to [Phaed's] soul– to that trembling knot of darkness veined with unimaginable fears– then chose to disguise nothing of that awareness"
―Nimander[src]

Nimander saw that Phaed was an increasing threat to others. He concluded that she must be killed, but he could not bring himself to follow through.[7] At Second Maiden Fort, Phaed set out to murder Sandalath in her sleep, but Nimander thwarted the plan by following Phaed.[8] The altercation between the two woke Sandalath, who was merciful to Phaed.[9] Sandalath departed, and the girl was left alone with Withal and Nimander, Withal threw her out of a window, killing her in front of Nimander.[10]

Quotes

"One look into Phaed’s eyes and the secret would be revealed. The secret of the vast empty space within her, where her conscience should be."
―Nimander thinking of how Anomander Rake would see Phaed[src]
