Rabbit was a soldier of the Second Malazan Army, 7th Legion, 10th Squad - which had been garrisoned in southern Genabackis under the command of Fist Steppen to maintain order in the area after the end of the Pannion War.[1][2]

Rabbit's name was thought by a fellow soldier, Bendan - a recruit and ex-gang member from far western Darujhistan - to be a silly name for a soldier. Bendan, going by "Butcher" - his old gang name - felt that it was a far better choice than a name like "Rabbit".[3]
