Rebben was the captain and owner of a riverboat that plied the waters of the Idryn River that ran through the city of Li Heng and which carried goods and passengers to the other cities along the river. He lived aboard when the boat was moored at a dock.[1]
In Deadhouse Landing[]
Rebben - aboard his riverboat which was moored at Li Heng - was rudely awakened by Dassem Ultor who told the owner that, "This boat leaves now." Rebben, having gathered his wits, informed Dassem that it definitely was not going anywhere. He had to explain to Dassem that, because of a strict quarantine that had been declared because of a deadly plague that was running rampant in Li Heng and the surrounding countryside, no shipping was being allowed up or down the river. As Li Heng had closed all of its river gates, Rebben and his riverboat were stuck in Li Heng for the duration of the emergency. Dassem swore but apologized to Rebben and gave him a heavy gold coin for having troubled him. Rebben reflected that this transaction was out of the ordinary, as - when one was "assaulted in the night" - one was not usually given money instead of having it taken away. Looking at the coin in better light after Dassem had left the boat, Rebben realized that the design of the coin was not one he was familiar with, leaving him to wonder just how old the coin could possibly be.[2]
