Red was a Mage in the Crimson Guard who employed a type of Elder magic which could be used to heal others.[1] Red was described as mostly bald, but had patches of unwieldy iron-grey hair, with ageing, sunken cheeks which had grey stubble when he did not shave while his eyes were rheumy and filled with humour.[2]
In Blood and Bone[]
Red was the most proficient surgeon and bonesetter left among those disavowed by K'azz D'Avore, as Gwynn had left Skinner's company to join K'azz.[3] He was the company's third surviving mage.[2]
In Dancer's Lament[]
Before the Vow and before the war with the Malazan Empire, Red was part of the D'Avore family's legendary mercenary company, the Crimson Guard. Well known for their opposition to the Talian hegemony, the Guard was commanded by K'azz's father, Courian D'Avore.[4][5] Silk, city mage of Li Heng, noted that Red belonged to the Guard's cadre of mages, which was second to none.[6]
