Regen Leath, a Napan known as "the Fat" because of his "generous flesh", was a sea-captain in the privateer fleet of the Napan Isles in the period before the formation of the Malazan Empire.[1]

In Deadhouse Landing[]

Regen Leath was captain of an aged galleass, the Just Cause, at the time Tarel was the king of the Napan Isles. The Just Cause was outfitted as a troop carrier, which made her slow and "low in the water" when overburdened with some two hundred soldiers aboard. As a result, Regen usually limited the Just Cause to coastal waters rather than sailing her in the deep waters of the open sea. However, when Regen joined the rest of the Napan fleet in a sea battle involving the Malazan privateer fleet outside the port city of Cawn, he and the Just Cause encountered a Malazan vessel, the Twisted, captained by a renegade Napan, Cartheron Crust, which was just joining the hostilities. Regen turned the Just Cause and took chase of the other vessel, grimly determined to catch up with the Twisted so as to capture her and her outlawed captain and crew.[2]

To begin with, Regen Leath and the Just Cause were out-sailed by Cartheron and the faster Twisted. In an effort to mislead Regen as to where the renegades were heading, Cartheron changed headings several times and sailed the Twisted into the rough water and high seas of the open ocean with the hope that Regen would not be able to followed with the Just Cause. But Regen stubbornly stuck with the Twisted and Cartheron was unable to lose sight of the blue sails of the Just Cause. Finally, as the Twisted entered the dangerous waters of the Strait of Storms, Cartheron no longer could see the Just Cause behind, and hoped that she had either sunk or that Regen had given up the chase.[3] The actual fate of Regen Leath and the Just Cause was not known to Cartheron or his shipmates.[4]
