Duke Rethor, in the very early days of the formation of the Malazan Empire, was the head of the ruling family of Jurda. The Duke had an uncle, Lord Fense.[1]

In this period, Duke Rethor was an ally of Malle of Gris. Because, at this time, Castle Jurda had been "isolated and besieged" by the united forces of the Bloor royal family and its allies, Malle had called for a council of the Grisian allies. Duke Rethor sent assurances to Malle - via Lord Fense - that "he would hold against the damned Bloorians" for as long as necessary. The Duke, at the same time, requested that the Grisian allies organize a relief force. After discussion, the allies enthusiastically agreed to exert every effort to "push back the Bloorians" in order to relieve Duke Rethor and Castle Jurda.[2]
