Lady Serenna was an ancient dowager and the "honorary" matriarch of the extended noble Kan family of Itko Kan. Chulalorn the Third had been her nephew - which made the current child king, Chulalorn the Fourth, her grandnephew as well as his being her ward. Lady Serenna 'reigned' from the Kan family compound's main reception chamber where she adjudicated Kan family problems, using her camphorwood fan as a judge would use a gavel. The dowager's voice was described as being "high and thin".[1]
In Kellanved's Reach[]
One day, Lady Serenna learned of a contretemps involving her grandnephew and his tutor, Bahn Throol. The dowager had the two brought to her at the reception chamber to discover the incident's details. While Lady Serenna was questioning Chulalorn, they were interrupted by the arrival of Iko, the head of the Sword-Dancers. Even though the dowager told Iko that she was interfering in a Kan family matter, Iko ignored the dowager and continued to use her influence with the child king to get him to do what she thought was the 'right' thing.[2]
The distraught king soon found himself caught between the maneuverings of Lady Serenna and Iko. The ancient dowager, however, managed to handle the situation so as to manipulate the king and Iko and to bring about the dismissal of Iko from the king's service - a goal which the dowager, and the Kan family in general, had long wished for.[3]
