Shalmanat had been the legendary Protectress of Li Heng, supposedly since the city's founding.[2]

In Return of the Crimson GuardEdit

Hurl was questioning Silk about an apparent bolt-hole under Li Heng. He confirmed that it had not been used, that they should have known that 'she' would never have abandoned the city. Hurl realised that Silk was talking about Shalmanat, the legendary protectress of Li Heng who had been slain by "Kellanved - or Dancer, to be precise" during the Malazan conquest of the city after she had refused to flee to safety.[3]

In Dancer's LamentEdit

She admitted to Silk that she was a Tiste Liosan who became disillusioned with the war between light and dark and fled to the Malazan realm in order to build something in peace. She was an extremely powerful magus that called upon Kurald Thyrllan and held some measure of control over Ryllandaras. She ruled the city along with a group of chosen magi.[4]

After having seen her might, the people of Li Heng started worshipping her as patron goddess of the city, much to the outrage of the priests of Burn, the official patron deity.[5]

In Deadhouse LandingEdit

Shalmanat summoned Dassem Ultor to a meeting with her in the palace to ask for his help in making his God intervene against the plague which was spreading in the city. Dassem refused, saying he could not as he was only a servant of Hood and the god would not intervene in such matters, which was as Shalmanat had feared. [6]
