The name Shores of Creation was coined by Leoman to describe the place he and Kiska found themselves after entering the Chaos Whorl.[1]

First there was the dawn...that seemed to emerge from the sea of molten light [or Vitr]. It began as a brightening in one direction...[and] the glimmering sea of energy seemed to give up some of its shine and this bright...wave swelled over the dome of the starry sky obscuring it in a kind of daylight that later faded back into starry night.[2]

The shoreline was made up of fine black sand[3] and lined with rocky caves. It was inhabited by demons who had washed up on the beach from the Vitr.

Trivia[]

  • The sky is described as empty of stars in Stonewielder and full of stars in Orb Sceptre Throne.
  • Ian C. Esslemont describes the Shores of Creation as being "not on the [Malazan] world...another realm". He likens it to the "Greek idea of the eternal flux of chaos and cosmos, of creation and destruction, and the eternal need to renew and you have a force that's constantly eroding and destroying versus a counter-force that's trying to bring order to matter. So it's not void--there is a material there which we call Vitr, and it can be either, it can be unformed and chaotic or it can be made into order, it can be rigidified. And these two forces are constantly at war here."[4]
