In life he had been a tall man, but in death he was missing half his skull and had empty pits for eyes. He still carried a ragged standard bearing the image of a shimmering dragon against a dark field.
Surat had likely died in the Malazan invasion of the Crimson Guard lands of Stratem. With the end of the Diaspora the spirits gathered in anticipation of renewed war against the Empire. They were also drawn to the powerful presence of Traveller, and Surat directly addressed the Malazan's Thel Akai companion Ereko, claiming Traveller would be destroyed.
When Ereko counseled Surat against old feuds, Surat warned that Death waited for the old Thel Akai, that "He" was close now, and that Traveller would lead Ereko to "Him". Ereko dismissed him saying, "That meeting was foretold before humans walked these lands."
