Malazan Wiki

The High and Mighty Synod of Stygg consisted of Theurgists, Witches, and Warlocks who opposed the rule of the Lady in the Lands of Fist. They were thought merely to be a legend.[1] One of the Synod's meeting places was a rocky shore east of the city of Ebon.[2]

Spoiler warning: The following section contains significant plot details about Synod of Stygg.

In Stonewielder[]

The surviving members of the Synod held a meeting near Ebon to decide whether to it was time to overtly act against the Lady. It was attended by Brother Carfin, Sister Nebras, Sister Gosh, Brother Jool, Totsin Jurth the Third, and Sister Esa. During the meeting Brother Jool cast the Tiles for guidance.[3]

Despite Totsin's attempts to dissuade them, the Synod chose to assist the enemies of the Lady and bring down the governments that supported her. This included protecting the leaders of theJourilan Army of Reform and aiding their battle against the Jourilan nobility.[4][5][6] They also aided members of the Malazan Expeditionary Force who sought to overthrow the rulers of Rool.[7]

Their efforts were nearly undone when Totsin revealed himself as a traitor and murdered all of the members except Carfin and Gosh. He sought to create a new Synod that respected him as its leader. Carfin and Gosh defeated Totsin at Ring Wall in the same action that saw the destruction of one of the three physical fragments of the Lady.[8]
