Tarel's and Sureth's Father, a member of the royal House of Garell, was King of the Napan Isles in the period before the formation of the Malazan Empire. The king had two children: a daughter, Sureth; and a son, Tarel.[1]
In Deadhouse Landing[]
Upon the death of their father, a civil war broke out between the two siblings, along with their adherents, for the Napan throne. Although Sureth was the elder — and evidently her father's favorite — Tarel managed to usurp[2] the throne, thereby forcing Sureth and her chief followers into exile.[3]
In Kellanved's Reach[]
The new king, from his childhood memories of the relationship between his father and Sureth, was convinced — legitimately or mistakenly — that his sister had, from an early age, been their father's personal assassin. This led Tarel, upon his father's death, to the conviction that Sureth's goal must surely be to kill him. Therefore, after the old king's death, Tarel had decided that he had to strike first to take the Napan throne or his sister would slay him as soon as she could.[4]
