An accurate historical timeline may be the most confounding aspect of the series for readers who want all the pieces of the novels to fit together in a precise design. Erikson has admitted that some of the dates printed in the ten book Malazan Book of the Fallen series are in error, and later books stop using dates altogether. In some instances characters seem to age far quicker than the time between events would seem to allow.[1] At other times, characters make references that key historical dates are deliberately obscured in the public consciousness by decades.[2]
During a discussion on the Kharkanas Trilogy, Erikson did not appear keen on making all the numbers work out. "That's not how histories were originally told anyways. They weren't really about timelines. Herodotus would...basically throw out, 'Well, yeah, this was two hundred years ago or this was five hundred years ago', and you know, they're just random numbers basically...And I like that. I think it's cool."[3] Or as Erikson remarked in a Reddit AMA, "Timeline? Yeah, whatever."[4]
The below timeline tries to make sense of the conflicting data and will continue to evolve as each book comes out. In some cases, potential conflicts between dates are noted and point to more detailed discussions elsewhere.

Speculations on the start of Burn's Sleep calendar year[]
The first day of the Burn's Sleep calendar year may be tied to be the first day of Spring instead of the Malazan equivalent of our January 1st. In Gardens of the Moon the changeover from the Year of the Tusk to the Year of the Moon's Tears was tied to the Gedderone Fête celebrating the first day of Spring.[186][187] It is unclear if the Burn's Sleep calendar followed the same convention. The majority of events covered in Gardens of the Moon leading to the Gedderone Fete were recorded as occurring in 1163 BS.[188] The events of Memories of Ice were recorded as occurring two months after the Fete in 1164 BS.[189] But the Prologue of Deadhouse Gates begins in 1163 BS with the events of the Gedderone Fête already known.[190] Assuming the date is not an error by Erikson, Tavore Paran's ascension to Adjunct was either near instantaneous with Lorn's death or the Burn's Sleep year actually began some time in the two month window between the Fête and the start of Memories of Ice.
Speculations on the length of a year[]
A comment made in Midnight Tides seemed to indicate a year in the Malazan world may only have been around 200 days long.
After being told Gerun Eberict had killed two to three thousand people in the past year,[191] Bugg estimated that the Finadd was killing ten to fifteen people a day.[192] (Using those numbers: 10x200=2000 and 15x200=3000).
