Tocaras was one of the Napans in exile — followers of Surly[1] — who ended up working in a "rundown waterfront dive", "Smiley's", in Malaz City. Tocaras and the other exiles had recently been on the losing side of a civil war[2] on the Napan Isles.[3] He was known mainly as an archer,[4] but he was an experienced sea raider, as most Napans were, and knew how to handle a longsword as well.[5] Any description of Tocaras emphasized how tall (for a Napan) and slender he was — for example, he was said to be the "tall lean archer";[6] a "tall, mast-thin fellow";[7] a "tall, pole-slim fellow";[8] etc. It was also mentioned that Tocaras was "rather dour" in nature.[9]

In Deadhouse Landing[]

Initially, the owner of "Smiley's" was Jeregal, but Wu — much to Dancer's disgust — had bought the inn, making them the new employers of Tocaras and the other Napans working at "Smiley's".[10]

At one point, Tocaras was in conversation with the mage, Nedurian, regarding the Napans' ancient tradition of "always" giving the dead a "burial at sea". Tocaras, however, told Nedurian that he, himself, would not want such a burial. Tocaras, making a "grimace of distaste", said that he felt that way because he hated the oceanic dark waters — the sea having taken from him too many people that he cared about.[11]

Finally, Wu, now using the name "Kellanved", decided that the time had come for himself, Dancer, and their "close to fifty" followers — that they had by this time acquired — to take control of Mock's Hold in Malaz City. Ten of the fifty would go with Kellanved and Dancer through the Hold's front gate. The remaining forty fighters would be split into two groups of twenty — one of which would be under the joint command of Tocaras and Jack. The two groups of twenty would go overland and approach the Hold from the rear.[12]
