Tulip was a corporal in Sergeant Thom Tissy's 12th Squad Medium infantry of the 8th Legion, 9th Company of the Malaz 14th Army. He was a huge man.[1]

In House of ChainsEdit

Tulip was part of Adjunct Tavore Paran's punitive expedition against the Army of the Apocalypse. On the road from Aren to Raraku, he, Thom Tissy, Ramp, and Able had done their share of the fighting, and their names were well known amongst the other soldiers in the legion.[2]

In The BonehuntersEdit

After the Battle of Raraku, Leoman led the Army of the Apocalypse westward to Y'Ghatan and the 14th Army followed. Adjunct Tavore launched the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan by sending the army's sappers to breach the city's wall under the cover of night. First into the city were the Malazan marines, followed quickly by the heavy and medium infantry.[3]

Barely a street in and fearing an ambush, Sergeant Gesler called up Moak's squad as well as Tugg's heavies and Thom Tissy's newly designated sappers to clear the surrounding buildings. In the fighting that followed, the poorly trained Able, Gupp, and Jump misfired their munitions killing Moak's entire squad and themselves. Thom Tissy kept his head and charged forward with Tulip and Ramp to support Tugg's heavies.[4]

When enough Malazans were engaged in street fighting inside the city, Leoman sprung his trap. The city's olive oil-soaked buildings were set alight and the streets quickly became an inferno. Thom Tissy's squad and a mixed group of survivors from Gesler's, Fiddler's, Hellian's, and Balm's squads were driven by the fires toward the palace. Tulip and Sergeant Cord tended to Uru Hela after she was wounded by a fanatic.[5]

At the Temple of the Queen of Dreams, Bottle and his rat discovered a tunnel beneath the temple's floor. Tulip shattered the temple's floor tiles with a sword so Cuttle could create an opening to the tunnel with a cracker.[6] Tulip was among the small group of soldiers who survived Y'Ghatan by spending three days crawling on their hands and knees through the dark to safety. He left smears of blood as he squeezed his huge body through the tunnel, and he struggled not to laugh as Gesler accidentally tickled his bare feet while crawling behind him.[7]

After escaping the city, Tulip and the other survivors eventually caught up to the 14th Army west of Sotka as it embarked on Admiral Nok's Malazan Imperial Fleet to return to Quon Tali.[8]

In Reaper's GaleEdit

Thom Tissy's 12th Squad, composed of Corporal Tulip, Ramp, Jibb, Gullstream, Mudslinger and Bellig Harn, was one of the six squads under the command of Fist Keneb during the Bonehunters' invasion of the Letherii Empire.[9][10]
