Umryg's Speculated Position on D'rek's Unofficial Malaz World Map

Umryg was an isolated island kingdom[1] ruled by long-lived Primogenitrix Timmel Orosenn. Its thaumaturgs were organised in a group called the Circlet of Umryg and led by Circlet Master T'enet. The kingdom also maintained a standing army.[2]

The interior of the island featured mountains and a valley of burial caverns interspersed with ancient earthworks.[3]

Despite being an island, Umryg was "no sea-faring state." The Primogenitrix's ship Supplicant was slow and ungainly, supernaturally tall, top heavy, and likely run by magical means.[4]

Umryg's location in the Malazan world has not been revealed.

In Return of the Crimson Guard[]

Many decades ago, the island had been torn by war when the Primogenitrix's sister hired twenty Crimson Guard mercenaries to usurp Timmel's rule. The combined efforts of the Primogenitrix, the Circlet of Umryg, and the army were unable to defeat the Guard. Victory was achieved only when Timmel and the thaumaturgs were able to seal the guard within a warded burial cavern. But by then the "Blood Demons", as the Guard came to be known, had devastated the island and it took many decades for the kingdom to recover.[5]

When the Guard finally broke through the old wards, the Primogenitrix and her people failed to stop them. Instead Timmel allowed the Guard to escape rather than inflict further devastation on her people.[6]
