The following units of length were found in the Malazan books:

  • Arm-span[1] - frequently used in Deadhouse Gates very rarely in all the other Malazan publications
  • Foot[2] - used frequently in Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates
  • League[3] - frequently used by Erikson and Esslemont in all Malazan related books
  • Mile[4] - possibly one occurrence only
  • Paces - frequently used by Erikson and Esslemont in all Malazan related books
  • Quarter-mile[5] - used several times in Gardens of the Moon and once in Deadhouse Gates
  • Yard[6] - in Malazan Book of the Fallen only used in Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates, used sparingly in the Novels of the Malazan Empire

Steven Erikson explained that he changed the terminology he used over the course of writing the series, including that of some units of length. For his full response read his answer to question 37 of the Tor Q&A session[7]
