Villiob was the captain of the Earbeford town guard (known as the Earbeford Defense League).[1][2][3] It was unclear whether this was a permanent position or just an emergency promotion as those who reported to him disparaged his title and experience behind his back.[1][2] Burok snorted that three days in a recruiting line convinced Villiob he was a general.[1]

His face was such that it was impossible to believe a smile had ever graced his countenance.[4] He was prone to countermanding his own orders when faced with opposition by his troops.[5] He banged on his shield when attempting to muster his troops.[1]

He despised people who did not understand that acquiring a dog was making a lifelong commitment.[6]

In Upon a Dark of Evil Overlords[]

When The Tearful Three threatened to destroy Earbeford with their army of ten thousand undead, a motley army of four thousand poorly armed conscripts was placed under Villiob's command.[7][8][1] He mustered them in the town's main square[1] to practice drilling and marching and established patrols around the town's edge.[5] The hot, dusty, and boring work drew complaints from the conscripts forcing Villiob to downscale his efforts to a single patrol about the main square.[5]

Ultimately, Villiob's conscripts were not required as the town council contracted the necromancers, Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, to defend the town and rid them of the Tearful Three. After the pair dispatched the evil trio, Villiob and several others among the conscripts devised a plan for the now masterless undead army. Since the undead did not require pay or food and would be desperate to rejoin society, the people of Earbeford could welcome them back as the town's new working class. In the process, people of the lower classes such as himself would be elevated to a wealthier, more privileged class.[9]

Excited by greed, Villiob invited guardswoman Grabella into the scheme, noting that he had always liked her comrade Bleat's pamphlets, which had some good points about revolting against the current social order.[9] He led the town council and other townspeople to the undead to make the proposal.[10] But the newly freed horde of undead, under their leader Ilma, reacted to the proposition by announcing they would kill and devour the townspeople.[11][12] Villiob likely perished among them.

Trivia[]

Villiob was the subject of what author Steven Erikson calls "arguably...the worst sentence I've ever written."[4]

"He had a face for which it didn't seem possible that a single smile ever countenanced it (wow, what a sentence)."
