Lady Warin was an elder Kanese noblewoman in the years before the Malazan conquest and was a distant relation of the Kan and Chulalorn lines.[1] She worried over the fecklessness of the new generation of Kanese who "know only to spend money like water and have no concern for the future."[1] She was a dedicated student of all the Gods' practices and obeisances.[1]
When she travelled by her heavy and richly caparisoned wagon, she was accompanied by an escort of ten men-at-arms.[2] On the road, she issued commands to fellow travels and interrogated others in subjects she was interested in.[2]
In Kellanved's Reach[]
Heboric encountered Lady Warin's wagon on the trader road outside Traly as she was making her way to the Great Sanctuary of Burn near Li Heng to pray for the welfare of her family. The wagon was mired deeply in the mud and Heboric assisted her guards in pulling it free. Afterwards, the noblewoman demanded the priest attend her saying, "Walk with me. I would have your prayers--gods know I have need of them!" Upon hearing he was headed towards Li Heng as well, she questioned him in detail regarding the Holy Enclosure of Fener in Vor. Over the next three days of travel together, she demanded an account of every scrap of knowledge he possessed regarding eldritch worship and rites.[3]
On the fourth day, the party was halted by three mounted bandits who Heboric quickly recognised as more than they appeared--beneath their ragged cloaks they were well appointed with armour and weaponry. When Lady Warin's guards tried to scare the bandits away by invoking her name, it soon became clear that the bandits were assassins still engaged in Itko Kan's old dynastic wars. Hidden assassins armed with crossbows felled Heboric and the guards before the bandit leader entered the wagon to slay the old aristocrat. Before they could finish off Heboric, he called upon the Great Boar to ride his flesh. When the priest later regained his senses, he was covered in gore and the assassins and Lady Warin's wagon were nowhere to be found.[4]
